Loran Voss is scheduled to deliver a presentation at the Horicon Education and Visitors Center for a Turkey Hunting 101 class on Tuesday, February 27th, from 6:30 pm to 8:00 pm. Admission to this class is free for the public. The session aims to introduce participants to the fundamentals of turkey hunting, including turkey calling, and provides a forum for experienced hunters to share their insights on turkey hunting.

During Voss' presentations, he imparts advice on the basics for novice hunters and offers a guide for those interested in learning how to turkey hunt.  With over four decades of experience, Loran Voss, hailing from Fond du Lac, has successfully attracted gobblers in various locations across the country.

While Voss has pursued a range of game, such as deer, moose, caribou, and elk, he expresses a unique appreciation for the tranquility of sitting in a field and hearing the distinct, gobbling call of wild turkeys. The reintroduction of wild turkeys to Wisconsin began in 1976, initially in the southwest part of the state. The turkey population grew and spread, leading to the first hunts in 1983 (spring) and 1989 (fall). Although turkey hunting in Wisconsin hasn't reached the popularity of the gun deer hunt, it has become a common and valued activity. Despite annual fluctuations in turkey populations, the number of birds harvested by sportsmen has remained relatively stable, with an average of over 40,000 birds taken each year, down from the peak of 52,880 birds in 2008.

Loren Voss was coined “ The Turkey Commander”  three decades ago when he and some fellow hunters were traveling from the Ducks Unlimited Festival in Oshkosh based on his vast knowledge and experience in turkey hunting.  He has been known as the Turkey Commander of Wisconsin ever since.
